The Spenardian
Created and founded by Petersen in 2016, The Spenardian is dedicated to hyperlocal reporting in and around Anchorage’s Spenard neighborhood. In addition to the current events and news of Spenard, The Spenardian host stories featuring food, culture, arts and entertainment, history and profiles of the neighborhood’s businesses and inhabitants.
The Spenardian magazine formerly printed tri-yearly in 2018 and 2019. Issues are still for sale on the blog, which still focuses on online news for the neighborhood.
Education Week Gregory M. Chronister Journalism Fellowship
In early 2019, Petersen was chosen as the second ever Education Week Gregory M. Chronister Journalism Fellow.
“Victoria Petersen of the Peninsula Clarion will use the fellowship to report how cultural and geographic barriers, teacher shortages, historical developments, and more have shaped schooling in Alaska.”
Her project, Letters from Alaska, included three pieces covering an in-state student cultural exchange program, how school administrators are addressing the state’s continued teacher recruitment and retention crisis and how the state is struggling to pay for maintenance of school infrastructure.
