In their first author event, The Writer’s Block Bookstore and Cafe will be celebrating the release of Kathleen Witkowska Tarr’s new book, “We Are All Poets Here.” The event will consist of presentations, door prizes and more. Tarr has spent over a decade writing and researching for her new book.

The book, which Tarr describes as part-memoir and part-biography, focuses on her spiritual journey through Alaska and Russia after discovering the work of American monk and author, Thomas Merton.

“Thomas Merton is someone that became my spiritual guide by complete and total serendipity. It wasn’t planned,” Tarr said. “When I discovered Thomas Merton, and his life and legacy, I sort of immersed myself in his teachings.”

Tarr, a Merton scholar, traces Merton’s steps from when he visited Alaska in 1968. The book also features stories from Russia, a country Tarr has visited 12 times.

The book is being published by Vered Publishing & Design House, a publishing house owned by Vered Mares, one of the owners of the Writer’s Block Bookstore and Cafe.

“It’s exciting it’s in the Writer’s Block Bookstore and Cafe. I’m excited that my publisher is Alaskan, and right here in the Chugach Mountains,” Tarr, who has been living in Alaska since 1978, said.

The event will be begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, four days before Thomas Merton’s birthday, at the Writer’s Block Bookstore and Cafe. Presentations and readings will begin promptly at 7:45 p.m. and should last roughly 45 minutes.
